Steam-bent Maple Shell Is Tough and Toneful
As its name suggests, the Ronn Dunnett Classic MonoPly snare is fanatically engineered from a single piece of steam-bent maple. Unlike ply shells, which stand to lose vibrations between glue and wood layers, the Classic MonoPly resonates as a single instrument for superior projection and sensitivity. The select maple is softened with steam and bent into a perfect circle, then reinforced with re-rings to keep it perfectly in round for life. But as with any snare, the shell is only half of the story. A set of 2.3mm double-flanged George Way Drum Co. hoops — resurrected by Ronn himself — reveals a timeless tone and a satisfying rimshot when you dig in. You also get Ronn's R4 throw off and butt plate for fast head changes, deep hand-cut snare beds for uncompromising sustain, and a set of great-looking retro tube lugs.
Crafted from a single piece of maple
The Dunnett Classic MonoPly's maple shell isn't for everyone; some drummers just prefer the response of a traditional ply shell. But if you're in the market for uncanny sensitivity and dynamic control on top of maple's crisp, woody attack, then the MonoPly is worth a look. Ronn's steam-bent shell, held perfectly in-round by a pair of reinforcement rings, sports a timeless tone that you'll be proud to play and pass on to future players.
George Way flanged hoops are sweet and open
Dunnett's George Way double-edged, double-flanged hoops give the Classic MonoPly the sweet top end and stiffness you get from die-cast hoops, but without the additional weight. The result is a modern, open tone that drummers of all backgrounds will enjoy.
R4 snare mechanism facilitates quick head changes
The handiest thing about the Dunnett R4 throw off is its quick-release mechanism, which lets you remove and replace snare wires for head changes without touching your settings — a feature that Sweetwater knows our session drummers will enjoy. The R4's lever swivels to either the right or left side for easy access however you set up, and an adjustable friction screw lets you tailor your tensioning resistance.
What sets apart a Dunnett Classic snare drum?
Handmade, one at a time, from start to finish
Dunnett Classic snare drums are made the same way they have been for the past 25 years: 100% by hand. Ronn cuts and forms the shells himself, without lasers or CNC machines, then carefully maps and drills the holes by hand. He then hand-installs the hardware and cuts the snare beds. All Dunnett Classic snare drums come signed, serialized, and dated by Ronn himself, so you know you're getting a one-of-a-kind creation.
Deep snare beds prevent buzzing and choking
Snare beds are the dips/contours directly beneath the throw off mechanism and butt plate on a snare shell. Ronn asserts that many snare makers overlook the snare beds' crucial part in allowing the snare wires to move without choking the head. Dunnett Classic snare drums feature deep, "soft" snare beds — about the width of a single lug spacing — and allow his 42-strand Dunnett Presence wires to activate without buzzing or choking your tone.
Optional venting when you need it
Dunnett Classic snare drums are devoid of a traditional air vent. Why? According to Ronn, the trapped air in a non-vented shell produces a 1:1 transmission of energy from the top head to the bottom head, maximizing sensitivity and response. Even so, if you're a heavy hitter or traditionalist and prefer the tone of a vented shell, the Dunnett Hypervent I adjustable air vent lets you open the shell with the twist of a dial.
